This is amazing. The US men’s soccer team is resonating with viewers. With the US tying Portugal yesterday and the game in a very attractive late-afternoon timeslot on the East Coast (6 p.m.-8 p.m.), the match drew very extremely well.
You want to talk numbers, the game averaged 18.22 million viewers outdrawing the previous record, the 1999 Women’s World Cup Final on ABC between the US and Communist China which averaged 17.975 million. ESPN says the audience peaked at just under 23 million in the last half-hour of the game.
Univision’s average audience for the USA-Portugal game was 6.5 million viewers so combine that with ESPN’s and you get a total of 24.7 million viewers. That is higher than some Sunday Night Football games from last season. This is astounding.
The final rating resulted in a 9.6 which is still below the aforementioned Women’s World Cup Final (11.4).
Online, the game on WatchESPN drew an average of 490,000 viewers per minute with a total audience of 1.373 million and over 61 million minutes viewed.
