Nazareth Area revises student Internet policy

http://www.mcall.com/news/local/nazareth/mc-nazareth-schools-internet-20120921,0,5370587.story FROM THE MORNING CALL The Nazareth Area School District's newly revised Internet policy gives administrators the right to monitor what students are doing on to the district's network, but officials said they won't randomly investigate emails and surfing habits. The revision of the district's 7-year-old Internet policy, unanimously approved Monday, was required under the Children's Internet Protection Act, according to Assistant Superintendent Michael Roth. Passed by Congress in 2000, the act is intended to shield children from obscene online material. Superintendent Dennis Riker said the policy will be enforced at the discretion of the administration "If we have cause, we will look at email and Internet use to be sure it's done reasonably," he said. "Unless we receive just cause we will not do that." Michael Uelses, the district's information technology director, will be responsible for monitoring students when warranted, Riker said.
