Each episode puts a spotlight on Louis' hectic life as a successful stand-up comedian and newly single father raising his two daughters in New York City. Stay tuned for news on a pick-up for Charlie Sheen's sitcom Anger Management for a second season (probably for 90 episodes). TV NEWS ON JULY 30

http://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2012/07/tca-summer-2012-press-tour-cbs-and-cw.html Yesterday at the TCA Summer 2012 Press Tour, CBS was up. After some breakfast it was time for the executive session with Nina Tassler, President, CBS Entertainment. There was nothing major announced. Very quiet. After that there was a panel with the cast and crew of upcoming new drama Elementary. After that, we saw the cast and crew of the new sitcom Partners, which stars Michael Urie. That panel took us to a lunch break. After lunch, the focus was on the new Tuesday drama Vegas starring Michael Chiklis and Dennis Quaid. The new Friday drama Made in Jersey was up next at the panel. Then there was a short break with refreshments brought to you by The Jeff Probst Show. That was the perfect segue for a panel for that new syndicated series, which premieres Sept. 10. After that there was a panel for CBS This Morning, which just announced that Norah O'Donnell is replacing Erica Hill as a co-host. And the Sunday wrapped with the annual Summer stars party with talent, producers and executives from CBS, The CW, Showtime and CBS Television Distribution. It was right across Merv Griffin Way, in front of the hotel at their customized, outdoor event location. Fresh air...good cocktails... plenty of good food...and lots of conversation. Then today, The CW will be up. Breakfast will be sponsored by the summer reality series Oh Sit! with Jamie Kennedy. After that, there will a panel with the cast and crew of the new drama Arrow, which is coming this fall. Then it is time for the executive session with Mark Pedowitz, President, The CW. If there is anything of note, we will come back and post it here. After that, it's time for more series panels. We have one for the new drama Emily Owens M.D., which stars Mamie Gummer. And finally, the last panel will be for the new version of Beauty and the Best. That concludes The CW, as in the afternoon Showtime will take over with panels for Weeds, Dexter and Homeland. Weigel Broadcasting Co. and Hearst Television announce an affiliation agreement in which five additional Hearst markets will be adding the MeTV Network to its local stations. Joining MeTV will be WCVB, Boston; KCRA, Sacramento; WBAL, Baltimore; KOCO, Oklahoma City and WXII, Greensboro. This brings the total of Hearst's MeTV Network affiliates to 13. In addition, Hearst has extended its commitment to the network with the renewal of its existing nine MeTV affiliate agreements to 2015. As you know, MeTV features a wide range of programming which audiences and advertisers find comfortable and engaging. Me-TV's library includes almost 100 series from Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution, CBS Television Distribution, NBCUniversal Television as well as many independent series owners and producers. MeTV's line-up include some of the most beloved television programs ever produced, including: M*A*S*H, The Brady Bunch, Green Acres, The Beverly Hillbillies, Perry Mason, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show, Gunsmoke, That Girl, I Love Lucy, and Hawaii Five-O series.

TV NEWS ON JULY 29

http://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2012/07/summer-week-9-sitcom-ratings-new.html We're smack dab in the middle of the summer and we will be back with our normal weekly ratings report with the first four nights numbers and analysis in the fall, but we still will have our regular how the sitcoms did all summer long! Here are our summer ratings: Summer Week 9 (July 23-29) How the Sitcoms Did Last Sunday Sitcoms (counts for week of July 16-22) The Simpsons (Fox) - A special repeat at 7pm did 1.96 million and a 0.9 18-49 rating, as it was preempted from 8-9pm. The Cleveland Show (Fox) - preempted. Bob's Burgers (Fox) - preempted. Family Guy (Fox) - A special repeat at 7:30pm did 2.56 million and a 1.2 18-49 rating, obviously lower than usual since it didn't air in its normal 9-10pm summer slots. American Dad! (Fox) - preempted. Monday Sitcoms How I Met Your Mother (CBS) - A repeat did 3.98 million and a 1.1 18-49 rating, on par with previous week. Finally stopped the up or down trend. 2 Broke Girls (CBS) - A repeat of this comedy did 4.57 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating, up a tenth from previous week. Two and a Half Men (CBS) - A repeat did 5.8 million and only a 1.6 18-49 rating, up four tenths from previous week. Its best showing in the time period in many weeks. Mike & Molly (CBS) - 5.19 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating for a repeat was up two tenths from previous week. Tuesday Sitcoms The Middle (ABC) - Tuesday repeats will air for the rest of the summer, in addition to its regular Wednesday airings. The first Tuesday airing did 3.39 million and a 0.8 18-49 rating, on par with its normal Wednesday summer repeats. Last Man Standing (ABC) - A repeat of this sitcom followed with 2.51 million and a 0.7 18-49 rating. Could have been a bit higher. New Girl (Fox) - preempted. Wednesday Sitcoms The Middle (ABC) - A repeat at 8 did 3.66 million and a 0.8 18-49 rating, down a tenth from previous week again. Suburgatory (ABC) - A repeat at 8:30 posted 3.01 million and a 0.8 18-49 rating, on par week-to-week. The comedy will be moving to 9:30pm this Fall. Up All Night (NBC) - preempted. Modern Family (ABC) 2 airings - A repeat did 3.75 million and a 1.3 rating, down a tenth from previous week. Solid. A second airing followed with a similar 4.07 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating, on par with previous week. Good showings. Happy Endings (ABC) - preempted. Thursday Sitcoms The Big Bang Theory (CBS) - A repeat at 8 did 7.88 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, down three tenths (and a million total viewers) from the previous week. Still good, but down. Two and a Half Men (CBS) - A repeat at 8:30pm did a solid 6.64 million and a 1.9 18-49 rating, thanks to a solid lead-in, but down two tenths week-to-week. The Office (NBC) - A repeat at 8 did 2.25 million and a 0.6 18-49 rating, which is not good but again on par with previous week. Parks and Recreation (NBC) - A repeat of this followed at 8:30pm and did only 1.52 million and a 0.5 18-49 rating, down a tenth week-to-week. No rewatchability. New Girl (Fox) - preempted. Friday Sitcoms Whitney (NBC) - preempted, Olympics time. Community (NBC) - preempted, Olympics time. Saturday Sitcoms Rules of Engagement (CBS) - preempted. Airing tonight (Sunday) are repeats of Fox Animation Domination from 7-10pm. Summing it up. Repeats of The Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, Two and a Half Men-Mon & Thurs were impressive for the week. Everything else was OK (such as repeats of 2 Broke Girls, How I Met Your Mother) or just plain old terrible (such as repeats of Parks & Recreation, Last Man Standing). Feeling the repeat blues? Look for original sitcoms on cable this summer, with ABC Family's sophomore season of Melissa & Joey at 8pm all-new this Wednesday. What an underrated family comedy it is. New comedy Baby Daddy starring Chelsea Kane airs at 8:30pm with episode 6. TBS has week three of new sitcom Sullivan & Son this Thursday at 10pm. It's Cheers meets Sanford & Son, if that makes sense. Also on Wednesdays is TV Land's Hot in Cleveland spin-off series The Soul Man starring Cedric the Entertainer at 10pm followed by new episodes of The Exes at 10:30pm. TV Land has moved Retired at 35 to Wednesdays and is airing at 11pm. FX and Charlie Sheen come together in Anger Management airing Thursdays at 9:30pm. Even on digital TV, Bounce TV airs new comedy Family Time starring Omar Gooding, but it had its season finale on July 23...look for repeats on Bounce TV. All of these are multi-camera comedies, too! New sitcom airings is the perfect way to beat the summer blues! The Television Critics Association (TCA) has announced the winners for its 2012 TCA Awards. Bryan Cranston, star of AMC's hit series Breaking Bad, hosted the annual invitation-only event, held at the Beverly Hilton hotel in conjunction with the TCA's summer 2012 press tour. The non-televised ceremony bestowed awards in 12 categories to recipients in comedy, drama, reality, miniseries, news and youth programming for the 2011-2012 television season in this 28th Annual TCA Awards presentation. Members of the TCA, a media organization of more than 200 professional TV critics and journalists from the United States and Canada, voted HBO's celebrated Game of Thrones this season's Program of the Year and honored Showtime's freshman drama, Homeland, with the award for Outstanding New Program. Winning its first TCA Award ever, the FX sitcom Louie took home the award for Outstanding Achievement in Comedy, and its star, Louis C.K., nabbed the top trophy in the Individual Achievement in Comedy category. AMC's Breaking Bad once again received the award for Outstanding Achievement in Drama, having previously won the distinction in 2010, and Homeland star Claire Danes was honored with Individual Achievement in Drama for her portrayal of Carrie Mathison. Cable series continues to dominate awards shows.

NBC Continues to See Record Viewership After Day One of Olympics

http://sportsmediajournal.com/ NBC could not have asked for a better start to the 2012 Olympics. At least when it comes to viewership and ratings numbers. 28.7 million viewers tuned in to last night’s prime time telecast, making it the most-watched first day for the Olympics on record. The viewership is more than 5 million higher than the 2008 games and 2 million viewers higher than the 1996 Atlanta Olmpics, the most watched opening before yesterday. NBC’s two-day primetime average of 35.6 million viewers is the best start to a Summer Olympics on record, more than two million more than Atlanta (33.3 million), and more than six million more viewers than Beijing (29.5 million). The rating for the evening was 15.8, 14% higher than four years ago and 34% higher tan the 2004 Athens Games. The audience and ratings numbers continue to buck the debate that NBC is being hurt by not airing the marquee events live.

Penn State, front and center, on "Face The Nation"

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER The Penn State conversation never ends. It's the type of story that sells because it involves the fall of power and an icon and because no one, and I mean absolutely no one, saw the depths of this story coming a year or 10 months ago. So there's the added dimension of complete shock to this as well. While Penn State fans would probably prefer to turn away or look forward to brighter days, the story continues to dominate the news. And it probably won't totally go away for a long time to come. Judging from what I have heard from Penn State football fans, they believe the NCAA, Louis Freeh .. everyone has been unfair and they have piled on too hard. Some firmly believe that there has been been a conspiratorial rush to judgment in this case to throw the late Paterno under the bus when he has no chance to defend himself or his legacy. Everybody, I believe, wants the full story, all of the facts, to come out. And they believe we are nowhere near that point yet. It has been a difficult situation for so many Penn Staters to grasp and accept. Today on "Face the Nation" some very opinionated sports personalities -- Buzz Bissinger, Jim Rome, Bill Rhoden, James Brown etc. -- weighed in on the Penn State scandal and I doubt that many Penn Staters liked most of what they heard, if they watched at all, because for those who are outside the scope of State College, Pennsylvania and the "We Are ... " culture, there is certainly no sympathy coming for what went down in this situation. Here's a transcript courtesy of CBS: July 29, 2012 **FULL TRANSCRIPT** Bob Schieffer: And joining me now to talk about this situation and the impact it's had on football in general and, kind of, the state of sports in America, Sara Ganim, who is a CNN contributor. She won the Pulitzer Prize for her work for the Harrisburg Patriot-News" on the Sandusky scandal. Sara, you are how old? Sara Ganim: Twenty-four.. (LAUGHTER) Bob Schieffer: And you've already got a Pulitzer. All right. Bill Rhoden is a sports columnist for the New York Times. Buzz Bissinger is a contributor for Newsweek and "The Daily Beast." He wrote "Friday Night Lights," one of the best books about football ever written. And our own James Brown, who's here at the table with me; and out in Los Angeles, Jim Rome, both, of course, of CBS Sports. Sara, I've got to talk to you. You have heard the president. What -- what struck you here? What are the questions we need to be asking now? Sara Ganim: Well, I think the -- the situation about the money and how they're going to pay, not just for the fine that the NCAA imposed but the lawsuits that are inevitably going to come, the millions that they're already spending and will continue to spend on crisis management. How will they ensure that this doesn't come from the three key areas, from tuition money, from taxpayer money, and from donations from people who give to Penn State because they went to school there or enjoy the program? And the interesting thing about Penn State is that, unlike many state schools, it's what we call in Pennsylvania "state-related," so it gets state money, but it doesn't have to open up its records. So we cannot -- no one, no members of the public, no journalists, -- can look and see the money trail. And while President Erickson is telling us what pot of money they want to take the $60 million from, we don't know where that money was going before. So how do we know that -- where that $60 million might have gone to, you know, build the new academic building or a laboratory? How are they paying for it now? How are they paying for the -- the other sports programs? All of them, except basketball, are dependent on Penn State football. So where is that money coming from? And how do I know that my tax money isn't going to that? Bob Schieffer: Bill, let me just start with you, and just go around the table. A short question: Did the NCAA impose the right penalty here? Should it have been harsher or was it not harsh enough? Bill Rhoden: Bob, absolutely not. They should not be playing football. The fact that -- the fact that they are playing football is one of the greatest abdications, moral abdications, maybe, in the history of the NCAA. There's no way that they should be playing football. Bob Schieffer: All right. Jim Rome out there in L.A., what's your take? Jim Rome: Bob, I think they got it right. I think the NCAA actually had to come down the way they did. We're talking about the worst scandal ever. The NCAA couldn't just sit that one out. We're talking about a head coach who knew and an athletic director who knew, a vice president and a president knew that they had a pedophile within their buildings. They had to do something. So I think that they got it right. I think it certainly was punitive. I think that it was just. And I think that they had no -- no other opportunity or no other choice but to do what they did. And I think they got it. Bob Schieffer: Buzz Bissinger? Buzz Bissinger: Yeah, I mean, given the past conduct of the NCAA in which they literally never do anything, I think the sanctions were appropriate and correct. I think it's going to have a severe impact on the Penn State football program. When you lose scholarships like that, when you're restricted and you're not going to bowl games, kids -- it's a business, and kids and their parents are going to say, "Don't go to Penn State." Bob Schieffer: You know, my daughter went to SMU the year that they got the death penalty, no football. They canceled all the games the first year, canceled the visiting games the second year. SMU went ahead and canceled the home games. I remember going to the homecoming soccer game... (LAUGHTER) .... and it just wasn't quite the same. SMU didn't do nearly what happened at Penn State. Do you think the penalty was right, James? BROWN: I think, on balance, it was fair. I thought it was punitive enough. There's no such thing as a penalty that will be fair with all parties involved, Bob. The current athletes, they had nothing to do with it. I hate the fact that they're going to be impacted, but there's always collateral damage when there's a punitive measure put in place. And I think the right thing was done. Because, for me, it begins and it ends with the young people who were raped and abused. That says it all to me. Bob Schieffer: Obviously, something like this can't happen without consequences, but what the people in Penn State argue, some of them, and in the community, as well as some members of the board, is that the wrong people are being punished. The guys that did this have been fired. They've been sent on their way. And it's the football players, it's the fans who are being punished here, Bill. Bill Rhoden: Oh, God. You have got to stop -- I mean, that's the whole problem. The only innocent people in this whole drama are the kids who were raped. You know, I don't know if anybody has been the victim of abuse. But that's something that's forever. They're the only people -- and the fact that -- if you listen to this whole thing, the only thing that Penn State wanted, the only thing it would listen to is, let us play football. That's the only thing they wanted to do, let us in the game. Let us in the game, as long as we're in the game, we can make a little money here, make a little money -- if you shut it down, you're sending a message that resonates to California, down to Alabama, up to the Northeast. But by letting them play ball, that's the only thing they want to do, just let us play ball, and they play ball. James Brown: The competitiveness of the program is going to be impacted. The reduction in scholarships for sure. No bowl money revenue will be disseminated at all, $60 million is a pretty significant hit, especially to the second-biggest employer in the state there, being the Penn State University, period. So I think it was very punitive for sure. I do hate that the kids won't be able to pursue. But you know what? That's life. I mean, Sara said it back in the green room. There's nothing fair about that, but when you're talking about a situation that is as egregious as this, the right thing was done. Bob Schieffer: Well, Sara, talk to us a little bit. As a reporter, I'm interested, this must have been a very tough story to get. Sara Ganim: Well, you know, it's funny you say that actually. Because when you talk about -- a lot of people have been talking about the culture at Penn State. As reporters in State College, there was a joke, we used to call Penn State "the Kremlin." And it really was impenetrable. I mean, the Penn State practices were closed, the football program was incredibly secret. And when you talk about what happened and looking back in hindsight, these were things that were not really -- these were known things. It was very difficult to get information out of Penn State, out of the administration, out of the football program. It was just impossible. And so that -- you know, that has definitely carried through. And I -- in some ways, I think President Erickson recognizes that and is trying to make things more open, but I do think Penn State has a long way to go before we really know what's going on. Bob Schieffer: What did you do? Did you get a tip? How did you find out about this? Sara Ganim: Yes, I got a tip. It was kind of dumb luck in a way. I asked a source, anything else going on? What else should I know? And the source said to me, hey, you know, Jerry Sandusky has been accused. And this is the point where it's just one child, one boy, a teen boy who had accused him. And six weeks later that person called me back and said, hey, remember that thing I told you, never mind, it's not true. And that was the beginning of three years before we really could get a solid story to print. Buzz Bissinger: You know, and there are still a lot of unanswered questions. I have a lot of questions about the conduct of Governor Tom Corbett, why this investigation took so long. Why was a grand jury impaneled, as opposed to arresting Mr. Sandusky and then you could have continued the investigation? I mean, he put other children at risk. This investigation took three years. He had one investigator, he says two, on the case for the first two years. A narcotics officer -- and by the way, he was an attorney general running for governor, and you have to ask the question, was he scared of offending the Penn State base, which is enormous in the state of Pennsylvania? Bob Schieffer: Jim Rome, I asked President Erickson, what about Joe Paterno, did he stay too long? I found him fairly forthcoming considering the circumstances, but he clearly dodged that question. He said, well, people have to make up their own judgment about whether he stayed too long. Is that what happened here? Was this an icon who just should have retired or been retired some years ago? Jim Rome: Yes, Bob, I don't think it's a matter of him staying too long. I think it's a matter of a man who had an opportunity to do the right thing and did not do so. I mean, the one thing that we could always believe in, in college sports, was Joe Paterno, a man of integrity, a man of virtue, a man that would do the right thing given the opportunity at the right time. But that's not what he did. And a lot of Penn State fans are really upset about this, but the fact of the matter is, this is now his legacy. This went on under his watch. He knew about it, the A.D. knew about it, the vice president knew about it, and the president knew about it. And he did not do the right thing. And unfortunately, this is now what he's going to be remembered for more than anything else, not that he stayed too long but that he had a chance to do the right thing and didn't do it. James Brown: Hey, Bob, if I could coat-tail on what Jim Rome is saying, that to me galls me the most. You have got adults who are in position of responsibility, there to be carrying the banner for honesty and integrity and transparency, and they failed miserably in that. And this -- while this is the most egregious situation that I've seen, the tail wagging the dog, the athletic department wagging the dog at a big-time athletic program is nothing novel. I'm just hopeful -- I'm not very confident that it's going to happen, that there will be a significant change because this isn't the only place where the tail is wagging the dog. Big-time college athletics is viewed through the prism of money and it runs the show. Bob Schieffer: All right. We're going to keep talking about this, but we have to take a little break and make a little money for FACE THE NATION. (COMMERCIAL BREAK) Bob Schieffer: I want to go back to Sara. Do you think -- you just heard Jim Rome say, and we all seem pretty much in agreement that Coach Paterno had to know something about this. Do you think he was just out of it, though? Was this a fellow who had had a great career but probably didn't really know what was going on? Because it seems to me like the self-perpetuation of the Joe Paterno legend became even larger than the football program at Penn State? Sara Ganim: I would say it was larger than Penn State. Joe Paterno and Penn State were basically synonymous. And I think that -- when I talk to students there, and I've been talking a lot to students, I was a student not that long ago at Penn State, one thing that I really hope that people learn from this is that this was almost idol worship at this point to Joe Paterno. And it's just not fair to the fans. It's not fair to the person, to Joe, that we hold people to such a high standard on such a pedestal. I mean, really, honestly, to erect a statue, a larger-than- life statue of someone who is still alive on campus in front of the place where they work, can you imagine going into work every day with a 10-foot statue of yourself? UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I'd like that. Bill Rhoden: Nick Saban does. Nick Saban does. Nick Saban goes down whatever it's called, and there's a big statue of Nick Saban because he now won a national championship. Buzz Bissinger: Look, you know, we can use Joe Paterno's age as an excuse. Joe Paterno was a dictator. It took five years and an appeal to the state supreme court to get his salary, which was public. He knew something was going on in 1998. He definitely, according to the Freeh Report, had an impact on the decision that was made in 2001. At the end of the day, Jerry Sandusky was a member of the football mafia family, and as long as you don't rat, you're a member of the family. And what is the most troublesome in all those e-mails we've read, not one word about any of the victims. Not a single word. James Brown: You know what, I don't begrudge the success of any college coach who wins and wins consistently and does it right. I don't know all the story there. Time and distance from it will tell the full story. There's a truth that says that which was done in the dark will ultimately come to the light. So I don't begrudge the success. It's just the degree to which we deify them and then they're insulated, there's no firewall between -- the university is supposed to be running the show and that doesn't happen many places. Bob Schieffer: Well, let me bring Jim Rome back in to this. So we know how it happened at Penn State. Do we have this same kind of situation at other big universities around the country because football has suddenly become very, very big business -- not suddenly but is very big business? Jim Rome: You know, Bob, I've got a couple of thoughts on that. Number one, it will never be like it was at Penn State because we're talking about somebody that was there for 40-plus years and we're talking about a very small community that really derives a lot of its identity, both from that university and the football program. So it could never be like it was at Penn State with Joe Paterno. That was an anomaly in and of itself. However, I would say, and Nick Saban's name came up, you can't tell me Nick Saban is any less powerful right now than he was before this whole thing went down. To me that is what is so troubling. This is not going to change anything at all. The only thing this is going to change is the way Joe Paterno was seen. It's going to change the way that football team looks on the field there. But it's not going to change anything nationally because the stakes are always going to be what they're going to be and people are going to want to win and that's not going to change. I don't think it changes anything. Bill Rhoden: Do you think Les Miles has less power than the president at LSU? Are you kidding me? Jim Rome: None of them do. Bill Rhoden: And so I just want to make this very clear about this whole thing. I think that what we talk about here -- and you mentioned mafia -- we're talking about death penalties. The NCAA itself should get the death penalty. They is -- I want to get back to it -- they took care of the member of the club, OK, Penn State is a member. They slapped them around publicly, $60 million -- USC we were slapping them around a couple of years ago, USC is the preseason number one. And guess what -- and USC may get one of Penn State's guys. I mean, this business, the deeper you get into it, is incestuous and it's coming to the point it's immoral. And look what we're doing here, we're punishing a moral trespass with money. We're saying, "okay, you raise a moral -- but give us some money" Buzz Bissinger: You are punishing with sanctions, you are punishing with significant sanctions, more... Bill Rhoden: But it's still money. Buzz Bissinger: More than USC -- yes, it was a PR move for the NCAA. Is it going to change the culture of college football? No. Should players be paid? Of course. But we have this myth, this ridiculous myth was whole man that never existed, that was perpetuated by Walter Camp and Grantland Rice. It's a disgrace, and the NCAA is a disgrace. And part of it was a PR move. Bob Schieffer: Sarah, how many of the football players -- they can can now transfer to other schools without losing any eligibility. What's your take? What are you hearing? Do you think many of them will? Sara Ganim: No, I think many of them are going to stay. Bob Schieffer: Do you? Sara Ganim: Out of loyalty. And, you know, I think there's really only one -- correct me if I'm wrong, guys -- but there's only one who has been talking -- openly talking -- Silas Redd, to USC. And most of the players at Big 10 media day said, "look, we're sticking together. This is a decision we're making as a team. We're going to play this season." And I think a lot of them are standing behind Bill O'Brien. It's the same kind of reaction in the community. People are saying, "I don't care how much a football ticket, is I'm going to go to the games, even if I wasn't going to go to the games otherwise to show, hey, you can't beat me down. I'm going.." Bill Rhoden: They don't lose. Sara Ganim: I'm going to support Penn State Bob Schieffer: We're about to go out of time. I want to go back to what buzz said. should we be paying our college athletes? Bill Rhoden: No, I don't believe in that. I do believe... Bob Schieffer: Because they're the only ones not making a whole bunch of money out of this. Bill Rhoden: Well, that's the rule of the NCAA. The only people who make money are the adults. But I don't believe -- I do believe that there is something to be said for going to these great universities and getting an education. Buzz Bissinger: They don't go there for that. They don't have the time. They don't have the wherewithal. Bill Rhoden: I think that a lot do. Buzz Bissinger: I think very few do. I think very few do. And Cam Newton probably made tens of millions of dollars for Auburn, tens of millions of dollars and gets nothing. It isn't fair. It is a form of indenturement. Bob Schieffer: All right, well, I'm sorry, that is where -- we'll probably continue this conversation after we go off the air, but we have to end this part of it. We'll be back in a moment. Thank you all so much.

Friday's Opening Ceremony sets an Olympic record for TV viewers

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER NBC paid a lot of money to televise the London Summer Olympics and at least for one night that was money well spent. Friday's coverage of the opening ceremonies attracted an average of 40.0 million viewers, which is nearly 6 million more than the Beijing Olympics and 15 million more than Athletes. It is the best viewersship for any non-U.S. Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony ever. and it was the highest-rated Friday night on any network in a decade. Here's the release from NBC: LONDON – July 28, 2012 – In the more than 50 years of televised Olympics, NBC’s coverage of the Opening Ceremony of the London Olympics (8 p.m. – 12:02 a.m. ET/PT) is the MOST-WATCHED for a Summer Games on record with 40.7 million average viewers, topping the Atlanta Games (39.8 million). Last night’s viewership is nearly six million more than the 2008 Beijing Olympics (34.9 million) and 15 million more than the 2004 Athens Olympics (25.4 million), the last European Olympics. NBC SPORTS GROUP CHAIRMAN MARK LAZARUS: “This audience number for the London Opening Ceremony is a great early sign that our strategy of driving people to watch NBC in primetime is working. We look forward to the next 16 nights of compelling Olympic competition.” The Opening Ceremony on NBC earned a 21.0/37 national rating/share, the best for a non-U.S. Summer Olympics ever, and the second best for a non-U.S. Games (Summer or Winter) in 36 years – since Innsbruck in 1976 (23.2/37). Last night’s Opening Ceremony national rating of 21.0/37 is 12 percent higher than Beijing in 2008 (18.8/34) and 44 percent higher than Athens in 2004 (14.6/27). No Live, No Problem. NBC Sees Record Audience for Olympics Opening Ceremony

http://sportsmediajournal.com/ NBC reports that an average of 40.7 million people tuned in to watch last night’s Opening Ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics, making it the most-watched opening ceremony ever in the United States. The viewership is nearly six million more than the 2008 Beijing Olympics (34.9 million) and 15 million more than the 2004 Athens Olympics (25.4 million), the last European Olympics. Despite complaints by some of NBC’s decision to tape-delay the Opening Ceremony instead of airing it live, the ratings for the Opening Ceremony earned a 21.0/37 national rating/share, the best for a non-U.S. Summer Olympics ever, and the second best for a non-U.S. Games (Summer or Winter) in 36 years – since Innsbruck in 1976 (23.2/37). “This audience number for the London Opening Ceremony is a great early sign that our strategy of driving people to watch NBC in primetime is working. We look forward to the next 16 nights of compelling Olympic competition.” said NBC Sport Group Chairman Mark Lazarus.

TV NEWS ON JULY 28

http://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2012/07/digital-digest-more-sony-mod-offerings.html Welcome to Digital Digest! We're back for all of your news and a look ahead at Tuesday's releases, and this week, we have multiple reviews, with our reviews of The Rookies - The Complete Second Season, and we've also got two reviews of movies (with sitcom connections) recently released on DVD: the 1978 movie More Than Friends (starring Penny Marshall and Rob Reiner), and the 1986 movie Kate's Secret (starring Meredith Baxter). Let's get started! DIGITAL NEWS Manufacture-on-demand DVD products have been bringing some of our "lost favorites" to DVD lately, but Sony has been using them for some of their current series. This week, it was revealed that the Rules of Engagement - The Complete Sixth Season will be released as a MOD title on October 2. This is not the first time that the series has been released as a MOD title, as season five was released this way as well. Sony will also bring something much older to DVD (via MOD) on that date as well, with Iron Horse - The Complete First Season. And that isn't all. The same date will also bring two separate volumes of Hart to Hart reunion movies. Sadly, there is no word on actual season sets for Hart to Hart right now, but if that changes, we'll let you know. Sony actually has a bit more coming up, though, that isn't exclusively MOD. One of their biggest announcements in years (believe it or not) for classic TV comes with their announcement of Charlie's Angels - The Complete Series. It comes September 25 at a $65.99 MSRP. It will contain all five seasons of the series, including the never-before-released fifth season. Rumors are already floating about that this will be one of those "black spindle" releases (for those who aren't sure what that means, these are the value priced complete series sets which Sony has been putting out over the past few years with all of the discs stacked up on a very cheap plastic spindle inside of a thin cardboard box), and at that MSRP, that certainly seems likely... but we don't know that for certain. When we know more, we'll let you know! A more minor note from Sony is a repackaging of the season sets Seinfeld, also on September 25. Full details aren't really known about this, but new UPCs have appeared in Sony's upcoming slate of releases for every season of the series, and presumably, the sets will be packaged in smaller standard-sized packages which are more "retailer friendly," just in time for the holiday season (it may be a little early to be looking this far ahead, but I'm predicting we'll be seeing these repackaged versions dirt cheap on Black Friday). The MSRP for each set has already been reduced to $19.99, with prices much lower most places... so this is certainly a great value no matter what! Lucille Ball fans will come a bit closer to completion of their collections on October 9 as CBS releases The Lucy Show - The Sixth and Final Season. With this release, the only things missing as far as TV series for the "queen of comedy" on DVD include the final season of Here's Lucy and the one and only season of Life with Lucy. As for the final season of Here's Lucy, MPI has not announced a release just yet, but they have indicated that they will, in fact, release all six seasons, so it is only a matter of time until we do hear of a release for this set (hopefully by the end of the year). Life with Lucy doesn't seem to be on the radar from any studio for the time being, but we certainly hope that it eventually pops up somewhere. One of the most anticipated releases on DVD in 2011 was The Fugitive - The Complete Series: Most Wanted Edition, which ironically became "most wanted" itself as only a few copies managed to escape from CBS before the set was recalled, just a day before the scheduled release date. The release was supposed to not only include every episode, but also include a nice collection of special features and fix some of the issues that previous releases had where CBS spent a ton of money replacing the score in every episode to avoid paying music royalties, only to be met with frustrated and irate fans not appreciative of the destruction of the episodes. For reasons still unexplained, the set remained unreleased, and the few copies that did make it out there were shamelessly being sold online for hundreds of dollars over the MSRP. But now, there is good news: the release is back on the schedule, set for release on October 23 at a $239.98 MSRP. We don't know what, if anything, will be changed on this set from the previously cancelled release, and don't know if it will be better or worse than that set (although we're hoping for better). We'll let you know when we know! October 23 also brings more Perry Mason to DVD, with Perry Mason - Season 7, Volume 2. Don't forget, though, before that, CBS has Perry Mason - Season 7, Volume 1 coming on August 21!
