Fifteen local wrestlers reach Bethlehem Holiday Wrestling Classic semifinals

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

A little bit more offense and Nazareth's Chase Zemenak and Pen Argyl Area High School's Kirby Mutton could have had a little more breathing room in their quarterfinal matches in the Bethlehem Holiday Wrestling Classic at Liberty High School on Wednesday.

Then again, judging from the late successes Phillipsburg's pair of precocious ninth graders, Max Elling and Jimmy Schuitema, who needs breathing room?

Those four athletes were among 15 local wrestlers who have reached the semifinals of the tournament which will get under way at 10:30 a.m. today. The day's second session will offer consolation finals at 5 p.m. and championship finals at 7 p.m.

Also advancing to the semis were the Stateliners' Brandon Hull (220 pounds) and Anthony Pare (285), Nazareth's Tyrone Klump (106) and Aaron Bradley (220), Pen Argyl's Mike Racciato (145) and Dylan Evans (182), Liberty's Grimaldi Gonzalez (120) and Devon Lotito (132), Northampton's Jason Stephen (138) and Cole Sheptock (152) and Saucon Valley's Ray O'Donnell (195).

Wyoming Seminary leads the team score after Wednesday's action with 132 points. Nazareth is second at 103 and the Stateliners third at 93. Pen Argyl is eighth with 84, Saucon 12th with 76.5, the Konkrete Kids 13th at 75.5, Liberty 14th at 75, and Freedom 19th at 43.

Zemenak, a Blue Eagle sophomore, needed every bit of time possible to fend of Saucon Valley junior Bryan Israel 5-4 in the ultimate tiebreaker in a 126-pound quarterfinal.

"It wasn't a very good match for me, I didn't open up like I should have," Zemenak said. "In the tiebreaker I had a good game plan and I didn't think he'd hold me down. For the most part, nobody holds me down."

Nazareth coach Dave Crowell liked what he saw from Zemenak even if the score was too close.

"Chase had a close call go against him at the end of regulation and he didn't let it bother him and he still came back and won the match," Crowell said. "That's the kind of mental toughness we talk about."

Zemenak said he knew he should be more offensive.

"I get mad at myself when I know I should be scoring more," he said. "I have to improve my hand-fighting and my shots."

Zemenak would be well-advised to score as much as possible in his semifinal against Elling, who scored five points in the final 12 seconds of his quarterfinal to stun Camden Catholic's Alex Smyth 5-4.

"I just knew I had to get out and I threw him and got the two back points," Elling said. "I've done that before; I just knew I had to keep going. I'm really excited to be doing as well as I am for a freshman."

As is Schuitema, who fell behind 2-0 in his 132-pound quarterfinal before rallying for a 7-3 win over Honesdale's Matt Evans.

"Once I realized what I could do against him I stepped it up a bit," said Schuitema, who won a second-round match 9-8.

Phillipsburg coach Dave Post said his pair of freshmen have the mental toughness to hang in tight matches.

"They never think they are out of a match, and they act like they are always in the match," Post said. "They know how to turn moves into points."

More points would have helped Mutton in a 3-1 sudden-victory decision over Northern Lehigh's Brandon Loch in a 285-pound quarterfinal, but Mutton wasn't expecting them to come.

"He knows how to get on my nerves and when we wrestle it is usually like that," Mutton said. "He always wrestles me tough."

So Mutton was surprised when a move suddenly worked in the extra period.

"He pushed in, I shrugged him and took him down," he said. "It was kind of a safe move, I didn't want to get under him with 12 seconds left (in the period). That move hadn't worked the whole match; maybe I wore him out or something."

Give Schuitema the last word for all the close-shave winners:

"This is really fun," he said.

The fun increases with today's semifinals.
