Seedings and pairings announced for NJSIAA wrestling tournament

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

The NJSIAA wrestling tournament was seeded today at NJSIAA headquarters in Robbinsville, N.J.

The tournament will begin Friday when the preliminary and pre-quarterfinal rounds are wrestled at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

The three-day tournament will come to a close on Sunday afternoon with the champion bouts in the 14 weight classes.

For each of the 14 weight classes, the pairings are listed from the top of the bracket to the bottom. The top (T) and bottom (B) brackets are seeded separately. Each bracket, top and bottom, has eight seeded wrestlers for a total of 16 seeds among the 24 wrestlers in each weight class.

The eight region champions in each weight class receive a bye into the pre-quarterfinal round. The second- and third-place finishers from each region will wrestle in the preliminary round, which opens the state tournament.

Andy has been President of the Dream Kids Fan Club for many years and continues to give back to the organization that granted him a Dream Come True computer. He is also RCN's main man and is present on each and every RCN yearly broadcast of the Dream Come True Telethon. It is no secret that Dream Come True is very special to Andy Weaver and we want to take this evening to give him special thanks and praise! Bobby is so very intelligent and has his own website business. Vera Nederostek and her sister are hosting a benefit/fundraiser on behalf of the

is referred to as "the 2nd 911" ! This was a huge disaster and it has
personally effected me since one of the families that lost everything is my

families. An account for them has been set up at People's First Credit
Union,

37 Quakertown, PA 18951. Any monetary donations can be sent to this address
for deposit into the account for them. Schnecksville Fire Company has

Allen, a local Elvis tribute artist, will be putting on an awesome show, Ned
Richards, WGPA's Oldies and Doo-Wop DJ and Dawn Binz Photography have all

If last year's win over Central Catholic in the district 3A title game didn't get your attention or if an earlier 18-point win over Emmaus didn't catch your eye, then maybe beating Nazareth finally did. This is a very good team. Nick Schlitzer is one of the best players in the state. Liberty had better not over look them. In talking to Chad Landis after the game tonight, he said he had a mature bunch that will play will with intensity and not take anybody for granted. That kind of attitude will be needed on Weds. night.

2. Allen's guards continue to be the key. They outplayed Easton's guards tonight and that was the difference in the Canaries' win. You know Allen will be better than most teams inside. Jalen Cannon continues to dominate offensively and Daquan Holiday has become a shot-blocking machine defensively. The key -- as it has been all season is for the guards to take care of the ball, hit some outside shots to loosen up defenses, and also to apply pressure out front defensively. Robert Rodriguez, Eric Ayers, and Branden Harrington all delivered against the Rovers.

3. The talent disparity between the LVC and Colonial League in still quite obvious. I know Saucon Valley is your league champion in the Colonial League this year, but that league's best team most of the season was Bangor and they had absolutely no shot against Liberty's superior strength and quickness tonight. The Slaters can shoot, but made just one of 12 shots in the first quarter and were 1-for-14 at one point. I know that Central Catholic is not as good as Liberty, but after seeing how Bangor-Liberty unfolded tonight, I see Central as a clearcut favorite in the 3A semis. I get the feeling they will be too physical and strong for the Panthers.

4. It's not easy coming up with locations for these games. With four schools located a fair distance from each other -- Pottsville, Pocono Mountain West, Liberty and Allen -- the District 11 committee didn't have an easy time in deciding where to play the 4A semis on Wednesday. If you looked on a map, perhaps Lehighton would be the perfect meeting place for this foursome, but this is the 4A semis and you'd think there will be a crowd of at least 2500 to 2800 there, so you need a big facility and I don't think there's one in the Lehighton area that could accomodate that many people.

5. Pocono Mountain West's Tynell Fortune does more than shoot the ball. He controls games. Note that the dazzling point guard was just 3-for-17 from the field, but was 12-for-15 at the foul line in his team's win over East. Chances are, no one else touched the ball when it mattered most for West. Brad Pensyl is no dummy. You keep the ball in the hands of your best player and Fortune has proven he's the MVC's best. And he won't shoot that poorly again in this tournament.

PS: Notre Dame showed it can still win 2A games. The Crusaders' foe Shenandoah Valley must love the 3-point line and not have been interested in establishing an inside game. SV made six 3-point attempts, but got to the foul line just four total times. The Crusaders just might be on a collision course with Salisbury for the 2A championship.

Bethlehem Catholic crowns five district wrestling champs

FROM THE MORNING CALL

Back and forth they went, each round yielding something different in the two-horse race that was this year's PIAA District 11 2A Wrestling Championships.

In the end, Bethlehem Catholic's star power won out over Pen Argyl's balance and depth as the Golden Hawks won five gold medals Saturday night at Liberty High School to take the team title with 240 points.

The Hawks won the first three bouts in the finals, starting with Darian Cruz's pin of Saucon Valley's Bryan Israel in 4:57 at 103 pounds, and ending with Randy Cruz earning a solid 6-1 decision over Wilson's Mike Fleck at 119.

In between, Zeke Moisey took care of business — his loose shoulder again not an issue — in scoring a 9-1 decision over Pen Argyl's Jamie Welsh at 112.

Alas, their almost certain lock to win the first four was spoiled by Northern Lehigh junior Zane Heller, who came back from a 7-1 deficit against Jaydon Rice in the second period to win a 9-8 decision at 125.

Heller bear-hugged Rice to the mat for the winning takedown in the closing seconds of the bout. He had closed the second period by putting Rice on his back for a 5-point move. The pin was there had Rice not been saved by the buzzer.

Even with the reprieve, Rice failed to capitalize. He still had a 1-point lead but had to start the third on offense. Heller, too tough to hold down, escaped for the tie.

The bout was in sharp contrast to their quarterfinal meeting at last year's district tournament. Heller won that one as well, but by a 2-1 count in overtime.

"He was more of a counter wrestler," Heller said. "He came out this year and he was more aggressive. He was on the offensive, and I wasn't expecting it. When I got down 5-0, I just realized it was either come back now or lose."

Heller, who won this tournament last year at 119, didn't plan to go upper body for the winner. It just worked out that way.

"I'm not a guy that really likes to pick up and take kids down," Heller said. "I more or less just wrestle them and keep them down. But he did a good job, he fought the whole way through.

"… I was pretty tired [before that final takedown], but I knew it was either take him down now and get the win, or go into overtime and be even more tired."

More importantly, Heller is in position now to trump his father Ron's wrestling accomplishments with the same program some two-plus decades earlier.

"My dad was a two-time district champ, and my goal is to be a three-timer," Heller said. "So I'm one step up on him. I'm already at two."

Also winning gold for Becahi were Ryan Todora at 145 and Elliot Riddick at 160.

Those winning performances were enough to finally overcome Pen Argyl, who produced champion Mike Racciato (135) and runners-up Jamie Welsh (112), Luciano Burriesci (140), Dylan Evans (189) and Kirby Mutton (285).

However, Scott Desmond, who took over the team when Scott Kupec resigned suddenly following the district duals, was named District 11 2A Coach of the Year.

The top four in each weight class advance to next weekend's 2A Southeast Regional at Wilson-West Lawn.

John Lynch became the first of two Saucon Valley champions when he came through with the first upset of the finals — a 7-5 decision over previously unbeaten Sam Scheib of Tri-Valley at 145.

"I had never wrestled him before," Lynch said. "I knew he was tough, that was about it. I mean, if you're undefeated anywhere, you're obviously pretty good. I knew that would be the matchup and I trained all week for it, but I really didn't know anything about him."

Which could explain why he wasn't trying to be too aggressive at the end.

"I pretty much beat him on my feet," Lynch said. "I took him down three times. Near the end, he just got in on a shot, and that's about it. He almost tilted me there. It was kind of scary. He had a one-count. It was close."

Four bouts later Ian Gimbar joined his teammate as a gold medalist by earning a 7-4 decision over Evans, who in the semifinals had taken out No. 2 seed Luke Garner of Catasauqua with a pin.

Meanwhile, Tamaqua senior Garth Lakitsky just kept rolling along as clearly the most dominant wrestler of any weight class in this district. He continued his season-long streak of pinning every opponent by flattening North Schuylkill's Scott Yagielnski in 1:03 at 215.

The Lakitsky has yet to enter the third period with any opponent this season, though he came close in the semifinals, when Bethlehem Catholic's Josh Alpha didn't succumb until 6 seconds remained in the second. He earned the district's 2A Pinner Award with three falls in a cumulative time of 5:21.

Also winning gold medals Saturday night were Northwestern's Bobby Clymer (152), Tri-Valley's Ty Schoffstall (130) and Williams Valley's Ben Ancheff (285).

Clymer rocked Becahi's Kyle Dehaut, the top seed, with a pin in 3:03 at 152 to win the Outstanding Wrestler Award.

Ancheff pinned his way through the tournament until Mutton went the distance with him in a 9-0 loss to finish the tournament.

Easton advances 13, cruises to District 11 3A title

They don't discuss the streak that often (except for 2009, maybe), but they did talk about winning a title for the last time together.

The Red Rovers won two titles, advanced 13 wrestlers to regionals and claimed 14 medals overall in cruising to the District 11 Class 3A wrestling title Saturday at Liberty High. To punctuate the night, Easton coach Steve Powell was named the district's 3A coach of the year.

"This does mean a lot," Easton senior Joey Rizzolino said, "especially since we were disappointed at [state duals] a bit. This was our last shot to win one of these."

Rizzolino (135 pounds) and Mitch Minotti (140) each won their second district titles, extending Easton's streak to 64 of consecutive seasons with a district champion. Perhaps more important, though, was the lineup's consistency. The 13 wrestlers who advanced included freshman Kyle Baker (103); 152-pounder Solomon Sohn, who scored an upset Friday; and sophomore Dyvon Gibson, who entered districts having wrestled just seven varsity matches. Further, junior Francis Slover placed seventh at 189 to complete the full lineup of medals.

Beyond Easton's title, the tournament was highlighted by Zach Horan's march to history, Mike Ottinger's thrilling victory and Northampton's revival. Horan and Ottinger shared the outstanding-wrestler award with Blue Mountain's Corey Keener, who became a three-time district champ.

Horan defeated Blue Mountain's Brandon Choate 6-4 for the 130-pound title, becoming Nazareth's first four-time district champion, a feat in which he took pride.

"It's always nice to be the first," the senior said, "especially with all the great wrestlers who came through the program."

Horan (42-0) already has made his imprint on the program's history, but now he's focused on cementing that legacy with the elusive state title. The three-time runner-up continued his pursuit with a tough win over Choate.

The bout pitted two of the state's top wrestlers, who have combined for 319 victories and five state medals. Choate actually became the first wrestler to score a takedown against Horan this season.

"I relaxed a little bit, and he's someone who could make the state final," Horan said. "You can't really relax and give him any openings."

Horan considered dropping to 125, where he would have pursued a potential state-final rematch with Franklin Regional's Nico Megaludis. Ultimately, he remained at 130, where he has dominated most opponents this season. A 4-3 victory over Ohio state champ Jonni DiJulius convinced him to remain at 130.

Nazareth's Franco Ferraina (125) joined Horan in winning gold, and the Blue Eagles advanced 11 wrestlers to regionals.

Parkland claimed two titles (with 215-pounder Tarik Haddad winning his second) and advanced 10 to regionals. But the tournament's best-known grudge match went to overtime, again, with Parkland's Ottinger winning in overtime. Two more victories, he said, and the series will be all square.

The senior (26-2) reversed Nazareth's Ryan Krecker in the ultimate-tiebreaker period for a 4-2 win in the 160-pound final. Krecker had won two regular-season bouts against Ottinger, including one in overtime, to take a 6-4 lead in the series. But defending his district title was important.

"That," Ottinger said, "was a big relief."

Ottinger certainly was prepared for the bout; his coach, Ryan Nunamaker, wrote a three-page scouting report that Ottinger studied before the final. Teammate Haddad won his second consecutive district title, defeating Easton's Tyler Greene 5-3.

For Northampton, the tournament was a success after an uneven season. The Konkrete Kids led all teams with three champs and advanced 10 wrestlers to regionals.

"A lot of people really stepped up," said John Lambert, who won at 152. "It's definitely not what we expected at all."

The senior is wrestling the postseason with several pieces of protective gear, shielding a knee injury and a sore wrist from further trouble. For the most part, though, he doesn't think about them.

"I just try to stay out of predicaments where I really get hurt," he said. "I'm having a pretty good year, and I don't want it to end."

Lambert, a senior, won the 152-pound title with a 3-1 decision over Southern Lehigh's Luke Gotzon. Teammates Cole Sheptock (145) and Nick Sharga (285) joined him atop the podium.

At 112, Liberty's Anthony Cabrera won his second consecutive title by countering a late move from Dieruff's DeMarquis Holley. The junior scored a takedown as the third-period clock ran out for a 3-1 decision. It's a move he might not have been able to hit last year.

Cabrera, a senior, wrestled last season with a shoulder injury that required a brace, restricted his style and ultimately needed surgery. He had the procedure after states and rehabbed over the summer.

Healthy again, and wrestling without a brace, Cabrera is at full strentgth. He can breathe properly on the mat (the brace made it difficult) and he's able to hit his best moves again.

"I honestly feel 100 times better than last year," he said. "Without the brace, I feel like I can do anything I want."

Cabrera's teammate Brett Marino began his postseason by winning the 103-pound title

Emmaus' Troy Newhard (189) came from the fifth seed to win his first district title, defeating Freedom's Evan Kauffman 7-2 in the final.

Bethlehem Catholic sends seven to district finals

FROM THE MORNING CALL

The PIAA District 11 2A wrestling semifinals are over here at Freedom High School, and new team leader Bethlehem Catholic (200 points) has advanced half its lineup to the gold-medal round tonight at Liberty.

Heading to the finals for the Golden Hawks are Darian Cruz (103), Zeke Moisey (112), Randy Cruz (119), Jaydon Rice (125), Ryan Todora (140), Kyle Dehaut (152) and Elliot Riddick (160).

Not far behind is second-place Pen Argyl (187), with five finalists — Jamie Welsh (112), Mike Racciato (135), Luciano Burriesci (140), Dylan Evans (189) and Kirby Mutton (285).

Among the other semifinalists are Saucon Valley's Bryan Israel (103), John Lynch (145), Ray O'Donnell (171) and Ian Gimbar (189), Northern Lehigh's Zane Heller (125) and Colin Hedash (171), Wilson's Mike Fleck (119), Northwestern's Bobby Clymer (152), Tamaqua's Garth Lakitsky (215), Notre Dame's Jonathan Blank (160), Catasauqua's Vinny Pellechia (130) and Central Catholic's Damien Hopper (135).

Fleck seemed to run out of gas against Northern Lehigh's Lucas Dise, after tilting him twice in the first period and taking an 8-1 lead. But he did hang on for the decision and a berth in the 119-pound final against Randy Cruz, who had little trouble in his 14-0 semifinal win over Pen Argyl's James Elphick

At 130, Pellechia was losing when he tossed Bethlehem Catholic's Richard Cruz to the mat and pinned him with 1:15 remaining in the third period.

Because Hopper chose to start on top in the second overtime of his bout against No. 2 seed Nikko Stevens of Northern Lehigh, it meant he ended up having to ride Stevens out for three consecutive 30-second periods to gain the win in the ultimate tiebreaker.

Burriesci was in trouble against Tamaqua's Kolby Mashack, who was riding with a 5-4 lead with 10 seconds remaining. But a stall warning, followed by an escape by Burriesci with 3 seconds to go enabled the senior to pull it out and get into the finals against Todora, who had an equally difficult time getting past Mahanoy Area's Nathan Fegley with a 2-1 decision.

At 160, Blank pinned his third straight opponent, Justin Marsh of Palisades. Now he must face Riddick.

Easton sends six to finals at District 11 3A wrestling

FROM THE MORNING CALL

Easton qualified six wrestlers to the finals to maintain its lead at the District 11 3A wrestling tournament at Liberty.

Nazareth advanced five wrestlers, while Liberty, Blue Mountain, Parkland and Northampton qualifed three each. The championship bouts are scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight at Liberty. Class 2A will join 3A at Liberty for the finals.

The 3A semifinals included a series of close bouts, none more tightly contested than the 171-pound matchup between Easton's Zach Bambary and Dieruff's Jovon Reyes. The Dieruff freshman escaped to take a 5-4 lead in the third overtime period but was called for stalling with 5 seconds left, tying the score. Bambary then rode Reyes in the 30-second ultimate-tiebreaker period for the 6-5 victory.

Also winning in overtime were Dieruff's DeMarquis Holley (112) and Southern Lehigh's Luke Gotzon (152). Holley spun out for an escape to edge Easton's Peter Stanley 4-3, and Gotzon escaped 9 seconds into the final period for a 3-2 win over Easton's Solomon Sohn.

The consolation finals will begin at 5 p.m. The top six wrestlers in Class 3A advance to next weekend's Northeast Regional tournament at Freedom.

Five things we learned from a Friday night in Slatington

FROM KEITH GROLLER

Covered the District 11 girl-boy doubleheader at Northern Lehigh -- Central Catholic boys and Pen Argyl girls were the winners -- on Friday night. Here's what stuck out:

1. Why no student fans? I doubt if there were 10, 15 students there, total, from any of the four participating schools. I know the district ticket prices can hurt a young person's budget and this was only the quarterfinal round. And I also know District 11 rules prohibiting various things like signs and noisemakers can be a deterrent, but I couldn't believe that there wasn't stronger student support at these games. I realize it's a drive from Allentown to Slatington. Probably even longer from Pen Argyl to Slatington. And, I also know that wrestling is king right now in Pen Argyl. But the lack of student support was disappointing.

2. Northern Lehigh was an excellent host. I don't know of anyone who takes more pride in making sure everybody is taken care of than Bulldogs athletic director Bryan Geist. He has a terriic group with him, including football coach Joe Tout. Several days before the doubleheader, he sent out e-mails asking who was coming and telling people where they should park. He even did a diagram of where everyone should sit. I know the fans don't necessarily worry about accomodations for the media, but the media worries about the media and we worry about having a good place to work. Geist and Northern Lehigh couldn't have been more accomodating.

3. Pen Argyl girls coach Dave Moyer puts on quite a show. I don't know of anyone more into the game than he is. He's like Mick Jagger in his prime strutting up and down the coaching box. I thought he would need a police escort out of Slatington considering the way he seemed to antagonize the Minersville fan with his constant yelling. But Moyer, a former boys coach and official, knows what he is doing. He's done a nice job with that program and he certainly was able to find the right buttons to push in turning around a 17-7 first quarter deficit.

4. Central Catholic's future is quite bright. With three freshman players showing considerable promise -- Jim Vaughan, Muhammad Ali Abdur-Rahkman and Jean Lee Baez -- plus sophomore Mike Kammerer having a breakthrough night on Friday, the future was definitely showcased. CCHS will graduate some pretty terrific athletes this year in Jack Sandherr, Kevin McKellick and Ted Brochu, but the future is really bright with those four young players a year or two away from their peak.

5. I felt bad for Seth Stoudt having to sit out. We've been told not to reveal why Seth can't play right now, and we'll honor those wishes, but all I can say is that this is still a good young man and player who is having to adjust to an entirely new school, new system and any time a kid changes schools halfway through high school there's always a tough adjustment period. Sometimes that adjustment is overwhelming. Heck, I remember transferring schools in second grade and that was tough enough. It pained me to see him sitting on the bench on Friday night when everybody else was playing. And if I felt bad, I can only imagine the heartache he was feeling. I am rooting for this young man to do whatever it takes to get himself back on the court as soon as possible. And once he's back, I hope he flourishes.
