Nazareth Area Intermediate School playground dedication postponed until Monday

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

The Nazareth Area Intermediate School on Tatamy Road has a new playground, built from funds received from the Parent Teacher Organization, individual donors, the school district and a very generous, but anonymous, donor.

Dedication had been scheduled for this afternoon, but PTO spokeswoman Kelly Joseph said the rain forced them to postpone the ceremony until 1 p.m. Monday.

Buck and Aikman will have the Donovan-athon in Philly

FROM KEITH GROLLER

Joe Buck and Troy Aikman -- who else? -- will have the commentary for Fox on Sunday on the much anticipated Redskins-Eagles game.

I am shocked the lead announcers aren't doing Seahawks-Rams instead. Isn't that the big game on Sunday?

Actually I am a little surprised Buck will be working on Saturday, doing the Yankees-Red Sox for Fox in a game that doesn't really mean all that much since the Yanks have already clinched a playoff spot.

TBS, and not Fox, will again have all four divisional series. TBS overdoes its commercials every year, so expect to see more of Conan O'Brien then you'd ever want to see during the divisional series.

Fox has the NLCS and the World Series. TBS will have the ALCS.

Here's the complete Fox schedule this weekend courtesy of their weekly PR release:

FOX SPORTS NOTES, QUOTES & ANECDOTES

BASEBALL’S BEST MAKE FINAL PLAYOFF PUSH IN MLB ON FOX REGULAR SEASON FINALE -- The FOX SATURDAY BASEBALL GAME OF THE WEEK culminates its 2010 season on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 4:00 PM ET with three playoff-implicated matchups. With an AL East crown and home field advantage through the ALCS still within their grasps, Derek Jeter and the Yankees travel to Boston to take on David Ortiz and the Red Sox. There is still everything to play for in the NL West as Matt Cain and the Giants aim to hold off Adrian Gonzalez and the Padres. Down in Atlanta, the Braves look to hold onto the Wild Card when they host the Phillies. This week, the pregame show originates live from AT&T Park in San Francisco with host Chris Rose. Once game action begins, Rose joins the broadcast crew of Josh Lewin and Mark Grace as a reporter.

AIKMAN: MCNABB’S KNOWLEDGE OF FIELD & DEFENSE GIVES HIM THE UPPER HAND AGAINST EAGLES -- Hall of Famer and NFL on FOX lead analyst Troy Aikman has called some big games in his broadcasting career and this Sunday he adds to that list when he heads to Lincoln Financial Field to call Donovan McNabb’s highly-anticipated return to Philadelphia. Aikman compares the quarterbacks at the forefront of this pivotal matchup and which team has the upper hand.

ON MICHAEL VICK: “I thought the Eagles would be a good team this year if they had good play at quarterback. Now they are getting great play at quarterback, it’s just not from the guy they thought would be there. Michael Vick has been impressive. He’s obviously put a lot of time into learning the offense. What has made him such a great player this season has been his ability to accurately put the ball where it has to be. His running and being able to create plays is something he’s always had but now he’s looking to throw the football and that wasn’t the case a few years back. He’s looking to be a passer first and a runner second. That has made all the difference in the world.”

WHO HAS THE ADVANTAGE SUNDAY? - McNabb, who knows the Eagles’ defense and Reid’s tendencies or Reid who brought up McNabb as a rookie and knows his weaknesses? “There’s certainly a benefit to knowing intimately what Donovan struggles with and being able to attack that. But there has to be a huge comfort level on Donovan’s part to going up against players he’s practiced with and knows really well. There’s a greater benefit to Donovan knowing Andy’s Reid’s defense than Reid telling his defense one or two things about an individual player. The defense can change set ups and counts but that might not be worth all the confusion for just one game. Also, there’s not a lot that Andy would know about Donovan that 11 years of film wouldn’t reveal. Donovan’s knowledge and comfort level gives him the advantage.”

ON DONOVAN MCNABB: “Washington is using him differently than Philadelphia did, more play-action and moving him out more. He was with the same system and same head coach for 11 years and there is an adjustment period to learning something new and it’s only going to get better. This is going to be an emotional experience for him. It is going to be different. From getting there on a bus, to getting dressed in the visitors’ locker room and the reaction he gets from the crowd. But once he’s on the field, he’s going to have an advantage in that he’s that familiar with the field and facility.”

Fox and MLB announce earlier start time for Game 3 of the World Series

FROM KEITH GROLLER

A release just came out saying that Fox and Major League Baseball have agreed on what is basically at 7 p.m. start time for Game 3 of the World Series, which will be played in the American League city on Saturday, Oct. 30.

It's a start, but if these guys are serious about developing a new generation of baseball fans, all World Series games should start at 7 p.m., especially during the week when kids have to bed earlier. And then maybe kids can watch games to conclusion and still be able to stay awake in class the next day.

The release has some quotes about how nice it is for families to get together to watch these games at reasonable hours. How about more than just one game, guys, especially this is a Saturday game when kids aren't in school anyway?

The quotes:

“Starting the game earlier will allow more families to watch together,” said Chris Perry, vice president U.S. marketing, Chevrolet. “This fits perfectly with our commitment to baseball which stretches from youth teams across the country to MLB.”

“We’ve said over the years that if advertisers were willing to support earlier starts at prime time levels, we’d be able to begin games earlier,” said FOX Sports president Eric Shanks. “We’re excited to be working with MLB and Chevrolet, along with our FOX-owned stations and affiliates to make this happen.”

And here's the schedule:

Major League Baseball Postseason TV schedule

FROM KEITH GROLLER

I don't know about you, but I still think it's ridiculous how things have been pushed back on the sports calendar in recent years.

It was a novelty caused by 9/11 in 2001 when the World Series stretched into November and Derek Jeter hit that home run to beat the Diamondbacks in Game 4 four minutes after midnight on Nov. 1 and Michael Kay instantly dubbed him "Mr. November."

Now the World Series almost definitely will go into November, maybe as late as Thursday, Nov. 4. Only a four-game sweep would confine the Fall Classic to October.

And the Super Bowl, which used to be held in early-to-mid January is now held in February and NCAA basketball's "March Madness" now stretches into the first week of April.

Even the College World Series is held in late June, almost bucking the 4th of July holiday. They're still playing 6 weeks or so after classes have ended.

It's all about when the networks prefer these things to be held -- example November and February are "sweeps" months when advertising rates are set so it's better to have blockbuster events like the World Series and Super Bowl during those time periods.

The one good thing with this revised calendar is that it seems designed to get us through the winter months.

Having the Super Bowl in February definitely shortens the winter and my least favorite time of year.

They're telling me that LeBron and the Heat have brought back the NBA's popularity to MJ heights, but I still am not sure about that. I just can't get into the NBA until the playoffs begin.

Anyway, here's the MLB postseason schedule from mlb.com and you'll note that the dates for Phillies home games over the next couple of weeks would be:

Oct. 6, Oct. 8 and Oct.13 for the NLDS.

Oct. 16, Oct. 17, Oct. 23 and Oct. 24 for the NLCS.

And Oct. 27, Oct. 28 and Nov. 3 and Nov. 4 for the World Series.

Blanton, long ball lift Phillies in series finale

FROM THE MORNING CALL

WASHINGTON -- Phillies manager Charlie Manuel knows the importance of resting some of his key players before the National League Division Series begins Wednesday, but that doesn't mean he can't roll out a potent lineup during the final days of the regular season.

Philadelphia has already secured the best record in the league, so the emphasis now is on making sure his regulars are healthy for another postseason run. At the same time, Manuel also wants to make sure the Phillies keep their recent momentum, and he has the depth to do just that.

In Wednesday night's series finale against the Nationals, right-hander Joe Blanton won his sixth consecutive game and Ben Francisco hit two of the Phillies' four home runs in a 7-1 victory as the club ended September with a major league-best record of 21-6.

"If you keep working long enough, somebody is going to start hitting," Manuel said. "We hit some balls hard, and that was good to see. We got some right-handed hitters who got some pop. Tonight was a good night for them."

Philadelphia (95-64) has won 19 of its last 23 on the road, including eight consecutive series. The Phillies didn't start Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth or Chase Utley, but that didn't slow the offense as Mike Sweeney and John Mayberry also homered.

Blanton (9-6) has not lost since July 21 against St. Louis. He allowed one run (unearned) on three hits with six strikeouts, including three against Adam Dunn, and three walks over seven innings.

Blanton will pitch out of the bullpen for at least the first round of the playoffs because the Phillies plan to go with a three-man rotation of Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels,

"It was always good to finish the season on a positive note going into the playoffs," Blanton said. "I've relieved a little bit in the past. It's a little bit different and there is a little adjustment, but at the same time, pitching is kind of pitching."

Washington's Ross Detwiler allowed seven runs on seven hits, including the four home runs, over 4 2/3 innings with four strikeouts and no walks.

The Phillies took an early 2-0 lead on back-to-back homers by Sweeney and Francisco in the second inning. Mayberry's first home run since June 30, 2009, a three-run shot, increased the lead to 5-0 in the fourth.

"It's good to get some (at-bats) in the last few days here," Francisco said. "All of us were pretty excited to get in there. We've been sitting for a while. I just had a couple of fastballs over the plate."

Washington (68-91) scored its only run came in the fourth when Nyjer Morgan scored on a fielder's choice. Francisco's second home run and sixth of the year increased the lead to 7-1 in the fifth and ended Detwiler's night.

The Phillies won 12 of the 18 against Washington this season, including 5-4 at Nationals Park. The Nationals fell one game short of earning their best single-season home record since coming to D.C. in 2005, finishing the season at 41-40.

Werth entered the game as a pinch-hitter with two outs in the ninth and grounded out.

NOTES: Phillies right-hander Kyle Kendrick will get the start Friday against Atlanta, but the team has not named starters for the remaining two games. Roy Halladay will be skipped, and it appears he will start the first game of the Division Series on Wednesday. … Philadelphia third baseman Placido Polanco, who is battling a bone spur in his left elbow and tendinitis in his left arm, will likely play this weekend against the Braves. … Nationals rookie phenom Stephen Strasburg said in a conference call that he expects to start rehab for his right elbow soon after recently undergoing reconstructive surgery.

Dieruff girls continuing worthwhile "Queen of the Court" program

FROM KEITH GROLLER

Last spring I did a column on a very worthwhile program the Dieruff High girls basketball team is running -- for free -- at the Cumberland Gardens Gym on Allentown's South Side. It's all about getting more kids interested in playing sports and getting involved in the school community.

It's called "Queen of the Court" and the Dieruff girls are going to run it again over the next several weeks.

Besides reaching out to future players and helping the community, the weekly activities are good unity-building exercises for the Dieruff players as the start of the 2010-11 season rapidly approaches.

Here are the details sent along to me by assistant coach Bob Ardle.

Jimmy Rollins makes first start in three weeks in Philadelphia Phillies loss

FROM THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Jimmy Rollins went 1 for 3 in his first start in nearly three weeks, Roy Oswalt didn't allow an earned run in five innings, and the NL East champion Philadelphia Phillies began preparing for the playoffs with what turned out to be a 2-1 loss to the Washington Nationals tonight.

Adam Dunn won it for Washington with a solo shot off Jose Contreras (6-4) leading off the bottom of the ninth. It was Dunn's 38th homer and came with fans chanting "Sign Adam Dunn!" -- because he can leave as a free agent in the offseason.

The result of the game was meaningless, in the sense that the Phillies clinched home-field advantage throughout the postseason a night earlier -- and the Nationals are assured of finishing last in their division for the fifth time in six seasons.

But there were some matters of importance for the Phillies (94-64), who begin their NL division series at home Oct. 6.

"We've got to keep getting our players some playing time," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "We've got to try and keep them sharp."

That's why 2007 NL MVP Rollins played 5 1/2 innings at shortstop and batted leadoff. Sidelined by a tight right hamstring, Rollins hadn't been in the lineup since Sept. 8. He did have one at-bat as a pinch hitter Sunday, but Manuel sat Rollins out Monday because rain made the field slick.

Asked whether Rollins will be the team's leadoff hitter in the playoffs, Manuel said: "I have no idea.

"We'll wait and see how he plays. See how good his timing is; how his swing is; how good he's playing on the field. He needs to get on the field and play some. Get his rhythm and footwork. Plus he needs at-bats."

Rollins grounded out in the first and third innings, then singled in the fifth. In the field, he originally was charged with an error on a play in which he threw to third baseman Greg Dobbs on a botched rundown that led to a run for Washington in the first inning; later, the scoring was changed, with Dobbs charged for the error and Rollins cleared.

That run -- scored without the benefit of a hit -- was unearned. Nyjer Morgan walked, stole second, got to third on the rundown play, and scored on Dunn's groundout.

Oswalt allowed two hits and two walks and left after only 66 pitches. Manuel said he has decided, but isn't ready to reveal, the order in which he'll use his three best starting pitchers -- Oswalt, Roy Halladay and Cole Hamels -- in the playoffs.

Nationals starter Jason Marquis left with the scored tied 1-1, having allowed Raul Ibanez's 16th homer leading off the fourth. Marquis gave up seven hits in six innings in his last start of 2010.

Drew Storen (4-4) earned the win by pitching the ninth inning.

While regulars Ibanez, Ryan Howard and Chase Utley all played, Manuel allowed Jayson Werth, Placido Polanco and Carlos Ruiz a full night of rest, and used Shane Victorino only as a pinch hitter in the ninth. Manuel plans to give other starters days off before the regular season ends Sunday.

For the Nationals, the questions are about next season, including whether Marquis will be in the rotation and whether Dunn will be around at all.

The slugging first baseman, who leads Washington in homers and with 103 RBIs, can become a free agent this offseason, and his at-bats were greeted with supportive cheers from some spectators in the crowd of 19,117. If Dunn signs elsewhere, Wednesday's Phillies-Nationals game would be his last appearance at Nationals Park as a member of the home team.

Before tonight's game, though, manager Jim Riggleman indicated he doesn't expect to see Dunn leave.

"I don't even think that's going to happen. I really don't," Riggleman said. "I certainly don't sit here going into the future thinking that these last two will be Adam's last games."

NOTES: Riggleman was ejected in the seventh inning. ... The Phillies clinched a fourth consecutive division championship and the NL's best record by beating Washington 8-0 Monday. ... Utley's single in the fifth allowed him to reach base for the 27th game in a row.

Big 3 in place to start every NLDS game

FROM THE MORNING CALL

If you feel good when the Phillies have Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels and Roy Oswalt on the mound, then you're going to feel really good about their chances in the best-of-five NLDS.

It's looking like manager Charlie Manuel will be able to use just "H20" as his starters in the first round of the playoffs.

Closer Brad Lidge is all for that.

"When you've got these three guys going, it gives everybody a lot of confidence," he said.

"That would be good to line up that way," Manuel added.

That's just about the understatement of the decade. But Manuel isn't one to get too amped up about things, so we'll leave that up to you.

Because the Phillies solidified the National League's best record when they clinched their fourth consecutive East Division title with an 8-0 victory Monday at Nationals Park, Manuel and Co. get to choose whether they want to play the best-of-five series in a seven- or eight-day span.

They're going with the eight-day setup, which will look like this:

Game 1 on Wednesday, Oct. 6, and Game 2 on Friday, Oct. 8, would be at Citizens Bank Park. Saturday, Oct. 9, would be an off-day. Games 3 and 4 (both on the road) would be Oct. 10 and 11, respectively. Tuesday, Oct. 12, would be a day off with Game 5 returning to Philadelphia on Oct. 13.

That set-up would allow Halladay, who is expected to not make his final regular-season start this weekend in Atlanta, to pitch Game 1 and, if needed, Game 4 on regular rest. Whoever would pitch Game 2, likely Hamels, would be available to throw again in Game 5 (if needed).

"This is what baseball is," Oswalt said.

He's right. This is what every player, every fan wants.

The Phillies, who lead the majors with 20 shutouts, are making it tough to pick against them, especially with the way their offense has been heating up.

In September, the Phillies lead the NL in batting average (.289), slugging percentage (.460) and are tied for first in doubles (50). They rank second in runs scored (134) and third in home runs (30).

The pitchers have been almost as hot this month. They lead the league in wins (20), are third in ERA (3.25), tied for first in saves (11) and are third in strikeouts (204). For the year Phils starters have won 68 games, the most since 1993, when they won 69.

Even Hall of Fame player-turned-analyst Dennis Eckersley is reluctant not to favor the Phillies, who are 29-15 in one-run games, to get to the World Series for a third year in a row.

"How can you not pick the Phillies?" Eckersley said for TBS MLB On Deck. "They've been to the World Series the last two seasons and this should be the third time."

The Phillies' first-round opponent has yet to be determined, but because they have secured the league's best record, they will get the wild-card winner, unless it's the Braves (MLB does allow divisional foes to face each other in the division series). If the Braves get in, the Phillies would play the Reds, who they are 5-2 against.

The wild-card winner could come out of the West, but things in that division are still very much up in the air, meaning the Phillies could play either the Giants, Reds, Rockies (a long shot) or Padres. The Phils are 6-1 against the Rockies, 5-2 against the Padres and 3-3 against the Giants.

There's no doubt in my mind that the Phillies' toughest matchup would be San Francisco. Their starting pitching, anchored by Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain and Jonathan Sanchez, is outstanding. In the month of September, the Giants' pitching staff has a major-league best 1.84 ERA, leads the league in strikeouts with 197, has a league-low 47 walks and is holding hitters to an-MLB low .179 batting average.

The Padres, on the other hand, have been on a bit of downslide. Their highly touted pitching staff has an ERA of 3.95 in September, just eighth-best in the league. Opponents are hitting .259 against them (11th) and they've allowed 88 walks, third most in the NL.

Their hitters haven't fared much better. They rank 13th in the league in hitting (.237 BA), 10th in home runs (21), 13th in slugging percentage (.355) and 14th in on-base percentage (.297).

But the 2010 Phillies don't have players with the type of make-up that will be flustered by their opponent. And they subscribe to the seemingly tired, but effective mantras of "we focus on us" and "we take it one-day at a time."

Hard to argue with that.

It's even harder to argue with Shane Victorino when he says, "We're hungry."

That's exactly what Phillies fans want to hear … after they hear that H2O will have a chance to take over in the NLDS.

Notice the absence of Patriot League football teams in the Top 25

FROM KEITH GROLLER

As you know by now, the Patriot League is supposed to decide whether or not it will allow its member schools to give scholarships in December.

If the first month of this season should nudge the school presidents in any direction about which way to go, it's clear that if they want their programs to compete at the highest level possible, they have to allow scholarships and then come up with a sound plan on how to implement them.

After seeing Lehigh play two scholarship schools this month, it's clear to me that the Mountain Hawks aren't even close to having the overall level of talent that the scholarship schools possess.

I like the kids on the Lehigh squad. They're all good football players and most are also outstanding citizens and strong students.

But again, if you want to just have a football team for the sake of having a football team and be like the Ivy League and just play amongst yourselves and not worry about competing on a national level -- then, by all means -- keep going with this flawed, financial-aid model.

However, if you want to compete against the best and be among the best -- as Lehigh once thought it was in the late 1990s and the early part of this decade -- and if you want to put more than 8,000 people in Goodman Stadium more often than just when Lafayette visits every two Novembers, then you have to go the scholarship route.

It has worked out well in basketball, why can't it work in football?

It has to be disheartening from a Lehigh fan or alum's perspective to see the gap widening between the Patriot League and other scholarship-driven leagues.

The FCS level actually does it the right way and decides a real champion with a playoff format, unlike the BCS nonsense in the upper echelon. If you care about football at either Lehigh and Lafayette, you want to be part of that scene. You want to be able to go for a national championship, or at the very least schedule poeple like Villanova and Delaware and New Hampshire and know you can match up.

That's not happening right now.

Here's the latest Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS Top 25 poll.

Freedom to name new wrestling coach

FROM THE MORNING CALL

The Bethlehem Area School Board is expected to approve 34-year-old Brandon Hall as Freedom's new wrestling coach Monday night.

Hall, a Tussey Mountain High School and Lycoming College graduate, was an assistant coach for the last 10 years under Jeff Karam, including eight seasons at Freedom before the pair moved on to Bethlehem Catholic two years ago.

Hall will replace Rich McIntyre, who has coached the Patriots the last two seasons but withdrew his name as a candidate for the 2010-2011 season late month after the board pulled his name from the coaches list in July during an executive personnel session.

"I'm absolutely excited to become a head coach," Hall said. "It's something I've always looked forward to."

Hall is a therapist specializing in children autistic disorder. He has obtained a teaching certificate in secondary social studies and is working toward a master's degree in education at East Stroudsburg University.

Jimmie Johnson wins NASCAR Sprint Cup championship chase race in Dover, Del.

FROM THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Jimmie Johnson dominated again at Dover International Speedway, winning the second race of the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship today for his sixth victory of the season.

Johnson has owned Dover the last two years, winning for the third time in four races on the mile concrete track. He shook off a rare poor finish in last week's Chase opener at New Hampshire to take the pole, win the race and shoot up to second in the points standings.

"It's the weekend we dream of," Johnson said.

Jeff Burton was second and non-Chase driver Joey Logano was third. Chase drivers Kurt Busch and Carl Edwards were fourth and fifth.

Johnson's drive for a fifth straight championship is alive and well.

"They're good," Burton said of Johnson's team. "Well, they're not good, they're great."

Danny Hamlin kept his points lead with a ninth-place finish. He holds a 35-point advantage over Johnson heading into next week's race at Kansas Speedway. The points leader after Dover has never gone on to win the championship since the Chase's inception in 2004.

"A lot of people are waiting for us to slip up like we have in the past but I don't see it this time around," Hamlin said. "I think it's going to all the way to the wire."

Hamlin is a strong favorite to thwart Johnson's drive for five. Hamlin's average finish at Dover was 22.8 in nine previous races -- only Daytona at 23.1 is a more troublesome spot for the Joe Gibbs Racing contender -- so today was a positive sign for his points lead over the final eight races of the season.

"We're going to take it, it was a good day for us, but legitimately we had a second-place car," Hamlin said.

Hamlin had an active weekend. First, he blasted Clint Bowyer's explanation for an illegal car in his New Hampshire win. Then, he was bumped by Kevin Harvick, Bowyer's teammate, and the two got into a screaming match in the garage Saturday.

Hamlin considered the issue over.

Dover lacked the drama of last week's opener when Tony Stewart lost a big gamble and ran out of fuel right before the white flag lap, allowing Bowyer to zip past for the win. Bowyer's celebration was short lived after he flunked a follow-up inspection last week and was docked 150 points. His rough stretch continued with a 25th-place finish and -- unless he can win Wednesday's appeal -- his championship hopes are all but dashed.

Chase drivers were scattered throughout the results. Kyle Busch was sixth, Jeff Gordon was 11th, and Harvick 15th. Matt Kenseth battled a cut tire to finish 18th and Greg Biffle was 19th. Stewart was 21st.

Title hopes are grim for Stewart (10th place, 162 points out) and Kenseth (11th place, 165 points out).

Johnson finished 25th last Sunday at New Hampshire. It was the worst showing for any driver in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship and dumped him from second to seventh in points.

This time, Johnson led a race-high 191 laps and was greeted by smiling owner Rick Hendrick in Victory Lane.

"Last week didn't turn out like we wanted," Johnson said. "I don't look all that excited right now but there's a huge weight off my shoulders that we were able to come and win a race in the Chase, rebound from last weekend and we're in the middle of this thing and we're really, really excited."
