Lehigh Valley ousted from Carpenter Cup by Suburban One National Conference-Bicentennial Athletic League for third straight year

For the Lehigh Valley Carpenter Cup team, the third time was anything but charming.

The Suburban One League National Conference/Bicentennial Athletic League (SOL National/BAL) team ended the Valley team's Cup stay for the third year in a row with its third straight one-run win against the locals, 6-5, in a quarterfinal game played at Richie Ashburn Field at Franklin D. Roosevelt Park in South Philadelphia today.

In 2008, the SOL National/BAL defeated Lehigh Valley, 7-6, in the championship game and in 2009 handled the locals, 5-4, in a quarterfinal.

Nazareth Area High School's Drew Hercik had a two-run single for Lehigh Valley, while Bethlehem Catholic High School's Alex Longernecker added an RBI single.

Parkland's Joe Abeln's two-run double tied the game at 5 in the fifth but SOL National/BAL scored the decisive run on a seventh-inning sacrifice fly.

"Hopefully we'll see these guys next year and beat them," said Easton Area High School's Kevin Nemeth, whose ninth-inning blast to left was caught just a few feet shy of tying the game.

SOL National/Bicentennial will play SOL American/Continental in a semifinal game on June 28 at Citizens Bank Park.
