PENNSYLVANIA CABLE NETWORK 2009 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL SCHEDULE

PCN FOOTBALL "GAME OF THE WEEK" SCHEDULE RELEASED

It's football season once again and PCN is proud to unveil its lineup of high school games for the 2009 Game of the Week schedule.

PCN will kick off the season on Labor Day weekend with a Friday night opener between the defending PIAA "AAAA" state champion, Liberty Hurricanes and North Penn Knights. On Saturday, September 5, sports fans can watch a taped game featuring Mt. Carmel Red Tornadoes and the Selinsgrove Seals.

Throughout the season, viewers across Pennsylvania will get their football fix with a LIVE game every Friday night with an encore presentation scheduled immediately following Saturday's games. PCN productions will re-air immediately following the network's LIVE production as well as after the taped game on Saturday evening. The rest of the productions are courtesy of either a cable television company that serves the team's viewing area or by an organization with established cable relations.

Sports fans will get their first look at some players that coaches, college scouts, the media, and fans predict will go on to future high profile college and professional careers on the gridiron. This year's Game of the Week season opener will feature the Liberty Hurricanes, a team ranked 20th in the nation according to USA Today. The Hurricanes will be led by quarterback Anthony Gonzalez, who has received offers from several colleges including Penn State, Pitt, Florida State and Stanford.

Among the list of other notable players to watch are Manheim Central linebacker Dakota Royer, Sto Rox quarterback Paul Jones, and State College wide receiver Alex Kenney. All have given verbal commitments to play at Penn State. Penn State has also recruited Canon McMillan linebacker Mike Hull. This year's roster also includes Bishop McDevitt wide receiver Salath Williams, Sto Rox wide receiver Andrew Carswell, and Wilmington Area running back/linebacker Derrick Burns. All three have verbally committed to Pitt for collegiate play. Hopewell running back Rushel Shell rounds out the list as recruiters from Penn State, Pitt, Notre Dame, and Ohio State have eyes on his play this season.

This year PCN once again welcomes APSCUF, the Association of Pennsylvania State College & University Faculties, as the underwriter for the 2009 football Game of the Week series. For more information about APSCUF, visit their website at www.apscuf.com.

"The PCN Game of the Week gives millions of viewers across the state an opportunity to watch these talented high school athletes compete during their regular season play," said William J. Bova, PCN Vice President of Programming. "PCN is pleased to be able to support high school sports through these productions."

Statewide coverage of regular-season games lead up to PCN's exclusive live coverage of the PIAA high school football championships in Hershey. This year's state championships are scheduled for Friday, December 18 and Saturday, December 19.

DAYTONA 500 QUALFYING MOVED

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Qualifying for next season's Daytona 500 will be held one day earlier than usual, a move that avoids running the session on the same day as the Super Bowl.

The top two spots for NASCAR's biggest race of the year are typically held the first Sunday of "Speedweeks." But the NFL moved the Super Bowl back one week in 2010. Although NASCAR's qualifying would have ended before kickoff, the move avoids any conflicts with the game in Miami.

Qualifying will be part of a Saturday triple-header at Daytona that includes the exhibition Budweiser Shootout and the season-opening ARCA race.

PRE-SEASON HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL RANKINGS

Liberty will begin the 2009 season where it ended 2008 -- atop the state rankings.

In the Pennsylvania Football News preseason rankings, the Hurricanes are rated No. 1 in 4A. North Penn, the team Liberty defeated in the state semis last year and who will host Liberty in a much anticipated season-opener a week from Friday (Sept. 4) is ranked third.

Easton and Parkland on the "teams to watch" list.

In Class 3A, Wilson Area is ranked fifth. Central Catholic is listed among the others to watch.

In 2A, Panther Valley is ranked ninth and Palisades is on the "others" list.

In 1A, no Lehigh Valley-area team is ranked, but five District 11 squads (Schuylkill Haven, Jim Thorpe, Marian, Tri-Valley and Williams Valley) are at least recognized.

PA HOUSE UPDATE ON Monday!!

VICK'S JUDGE DECISON ON THURSDAY

Michael Vick's plan to repay more than $20 million he owes to creditors was approved Thursday, just before the quarterback hopped on a plane to Philadelphia to play in his first NFL game since 2006.

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Frank Santoro, who rejected a plan brought several months ago by Vick's attorneys, endorsed a new proposal that was smoothed over by Vick's return to football.

''Mr. Vick went from the height of wealth and celebrity to imprisonment, and back againÂ…and he is to be commended for that,'' Santoro said.

After the hearing, Vick signed an autograph, heard a man yelling ''Welcome back, Mike,'' and jumped into a waiting sport utility vehicle. Then he caught a flight from Newport News to Philadelphia to play in a preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

''It's an awesome feeling,'' Vick said of getting the bankruptcy case approved. ''I'm looking forward to getting on with my life and taking care of my obligations and responsibilities.''

He was happy to be playing in Thursday's football game, saying: ''It's been a long time coming. I'm looking forward to going out there and having some fun.Â…Hopefully we'll get to see some of the highlights on [ ESPN's] 'SportsCenter.'''

Vick's salary with the Eagles is $1.62 million for 2009, with the Eagles having an option to renew in 2010 for $5.2 million. The 2010 contract also includes incentives that could boost Vick's income that year by another $2.8 million, to $8 million.

During the hearing, Vick testified that he expected to make a minimum of $5 million annually during the next several years.

Under the plan, Vick will pay creditors on a sliding scale based on his future income. He gets to keep everything below $750,000, and will pay 25 percent of any income between $750,001 and $2.5 million. He'll pay 30 percent of his income between $2.5 million and $10 million, and 40 percent of anything above $10 million.

Vick will be able to keep his home in Hampton, Va., a truck, two retirement accounts and personal effects. Most everything else will be liquidated. That includes four other homes -- one outside Atlanta and three in Virginia. It also includes several other cars and boats.

During the hearing, Vick promised to live within a $300,000 annual budget, with his accountant saying he would ensure that most everything above that be invested in secure investments, such as CDs.

Santoro imposed on Vick the requirement, at least in the early years of the plan, that will essentially force him to live within that limit.

Vick owes more than $20 million to about 100 creditors, which he will pay off with future income. The more he makes, the more he'll pay.

The biggest creditors include the Atlanta Falcons, whom Vick owes about $7.5 million for a past dispute over his bonus. He owes about $6 million to his first NFL sports agent, Andrew Joel -- whose judgment against the quarterback triggered the bankruptcy case in the first place.

Vick also owes $2.5 million to the Royal Bank of Canada for a defaulted loan that Vick took out for business investments in the Atlanta area. Vick also owes about $3.6 million in fees to pay off attorneys and other professionals who represented both him and a creditors committee during the bankruptcy.

Vick's financial woes came in the aftermath of his conviction in 2007 for operating a dogfighting ring in Virginia. Vick, once the highest-paid player in the NFL, served 18 months in prison.

DEAL IN LOUISANA

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The final step of a financial deal to keep the Saints in New Orleans has been approved by Louisiana lawmakers.

Lawmakers approved a lease arrangement Friday that will have the state renting downtown New Orleans office space from team owner Tom Benson. It's part of a deal to funnel money to the team while limiting direct cash subsidies from the government.

The Joint Legislative Committee on the Budget agreed to the lease with a 10-2 vote of senators and a 17-7 vote of House members.

It was the last legislative approval needed to finalize the deal between Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal's administration and the NFL team to keep the Saints in Louisiana through 2025.

COWBOYS VIEO BOARD STAYS

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Jerry Jones can keep his video boards right where they are, at least for this season.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Friday clarified rules on punts that ricochet off the high-definition monitors hanging over most of the field at the new Cowboys Stadium. Perhaps the key part of his announcement is that the guidelines cover only this season, an indication the league may force Jones to raise the boards before the 2010 season, which ends with the Super Bowl in his building.

The league clearly wouldn't want even the remote possibility of a championship decided by a ball hitting a TV screen within a punter's reach.

"We will continue to address the particular circumstances in Dallas, giving full consideration to the competitive, safety and fan experience issues involved," Goodell said in a statement. "The Cowboys have been fully cooperative as we have addressed this subject, and we will continue to work closely with the club on a longer term resolution."

Long-term changes can be made only at the annual rules meeting. However, Goodell noted that Rule 3, Section 1 of the league rule book allows for changes new policy to be enacted for the current season only.

Jones was not immediately available for comment.

The video boards are the signature item of the $1.15 billion stadium because of their clarity and size: 60 yards long, stretching from 20-yard line to 20-yard line. The problem is they are 90 feet above the field.

While that is 5 feet above the league's standard, the ease Tennessee punters had kicking balls into the boards before — and once during — last Saturday night's debut game indicates that standard might need revision.

It happens that Titans coach Jeff Fisher is head of the NFL's competition committee, which is the group that worked with the league office to figure out how to handle balls conking off the boards.

Fisher's complaint went beyond the height. He realized officials didn't even see the ball hitting the boards because they were all watching the action on the field; he threw his challenge flag to make sure they realized what had happened. The ruling was a do-over, but time was not put back on the clock.

The new rules — which apply to all stadiums even though it's only an issue at this one — address those concerns.

Downs will still be replayed "if a ball in play strikes a video board, guide wire, sky cam, or any other object," but now the game clock will be reset to the time when the first play was snapped. Any penalties during the wiped-out play won't count, except for personal fouls.

Also, if officials on the field don't see the ball hitting the board, the replay assistant can now initiate a booth review at any time. If the replay assistant doesn't ask for a review, coaches can challenge under normal challenge rules.

Jones has been a staunch defender of the height of his boards for various reasons, including how much time and money it could cost to hike them. (They cost about $40 million to install.)

The boards are going higher to fit the stage for a U2 concert in October, but the screens will have to be disconnected. To lift the boards and keep them operable will require engineering and architectural adjustments.

Besides, Jones is adamant that he set this height for a reason: He doesn't think they are in the way when punters kick toward the sideline like they're supposed to do. Jones and Cowboys punter Mat McBriar say this has become a big issue because Titans punters intentionally kicked high and down the middle to try hitting the boards.

McBriar has yet to hit the boards and he insists "no one has told me not to hit it." He definitely has the leg to reach it — he topped 100 feet during a trial two years ago when Jones was deciding the height — but always aims his kicks away from the center of the field.

"It looks lower than it is just because of the size of it," McBriar said.

Former Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson was in the stadium Thursday and said he didn't see any reason to raise the boards.

"If there's anything wrong, it's that people are going to watch the video board and not the game," he said. "It is so dominating, but I think it's so cool. I think it's great."

RITE-AID FOUNDER DIED

HARRISBURG | - Rite Aid Corp. founder Alex Grass has died at 82.

Grass died Thursday after a 10-year battle with lung cancer.

He helped build Rite Aid into one of the nation's largest drugstore chains and was a philanthropist who gave to civic, health and educational organizations in the Harrisburg area.

Grass was educated as a lawyer, but his business career took off when he opened a health and beauty aids store in Scranton in 1962.

He stepped down as chairman and chief executive in 1995.

His son, Martin Grass, later ran the Camp Hill-based company but was ousted in 1999. He is in prison for conspiracy stemming from an overstatement of Rite Aid's earnings in the late 1990s.

A funeral is planned Sunday in Harrisburg.

SCRANTON YANKEES' THROPHY DESTROYED

SCRANTON - A northeastern Pennsylvania man is charged with smashing a championship trophy won by a minor league affiliate of the New York Yankees.

Lackawanna County Chief Deputy Sheriff Dominick Manetti says 40-year-old Michael Cortezar entered the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees administrative offices during Thursday night's game upset about a catering problem. Manetti says Cortezar then grabbed the 2008 Governors' Cup from a trophy case and smashed it on the floor.

The farm club won the International League title last year to capture the trophy.

Manetti says Cortezar, of Peckville, was arraigned Friday on charges including vandalism and making terroristic threats. A preliminary hearing is set for Sept. 2.

A woman who answered the phone at Cortezar's home Friday said he had no immediate comment.

KEITH GROLLER BACK ON RADIO STARTING SEPTEMBER 5TH FROM 9AM TO 11AM SATURDAYS ON 1470 THE FOX

BREAKING NEWS:

Story located on Groller's Blog:

ome of you have already seen an ad in the newspaper, so we might as well make it official.

I'm very excited to announce that The Morning Call sports department will be back on local radio with the debut of "Keith Groller's Calling All Sports" on Saturday morning, Sept. 5, on The Fox 1470 AM. The show will go from 9-11 a.m.

Before you complain about me getting myself in the show title, note that I didn't pick the show name.

But I am thrilled to be talking sports again on the weekend and with a solid sports station like The Fox, which is the home to Phillies baseball in the Lehigh Valley. It's an exciting time to be back on sports radio with high school football, Penn State and Eagles football and the baseball pennant races all getting going.

We're looking forward to a lively two hours every Saturday morning, talking everything from high school sports to the pros. We'll have interviews with coaches, players, local personalities, and other Morning Call writers such as Mark Wogenrich, Mandy Housenick, Steve Miller, Jeff Schuler, Andre Williams, sports editor Bill Kline and more.

However, the most important voices will be yours. We'll welcome your comments and questions about everything and anything and we'll have trivia giveaways.

We'll also have our sports TV show back on the air soon. Monday-Tuesday Sept. 14-15, depending on which cable you have, is the season debut date for that show.
